What are PRP and PRF facial treatments?

Short answer

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) are concentrates of platelets, growth factors and healing proteins made from a small sample of your own blood. Injected into the skin or applied with microneedling, they stimulate collagen and tissue repair to improve fine lines, skin quality, acne scars, volume loss and dark circles under the eyes.

Platelets carry growth factors that tell the skin to repair itself. Concentrating them and delivering them where you want new collagen triggers your body's own healing response, improving skin thickness, elasticity and overall quality from within.

Because the material is your own blood, with no synthetic substances, the risk of an allergic reaction is very low. Results develop gradually over four to eight weeks and can last 12 to 18 months or longer.

Which preparation suits you depends on your concern rather than on which is newer. Dr. Cappel explains the difference at your consultation and recommends the right one for your skin.

Three preparations

PRP, ezPRF or ezGel?

All three start from the same small blood draw. How the sample is processed changes how it behaves in the skin.

  • PRP, platelet-rich plasma

A liquid concentrate that releases its growth factors within hours. It can be injected or applied during microneedling, and suits broader facial rejuvenation.

  • ezPRF, enhanced platelet-rich fibrin

Holds platelets in a natural fibrin scaffold that releases growth factors slowly over 7 to 10 days, for sustained collagen production and tissue regeneration.

  • ezGel, heat-modified PRF

A smooth, gel-like form of PRF that gives gentle structural support while it releases growth factors. Ideal for delicate areas such as under the eyes.

What do PRP and PRF treat?

PRP and PRF work best on the substance of the skin: its thickness, firmness and quality. Published research pooled across studies reports improved skin thickness in 80% of studies, elasticity in 75% and wrinkles in 40%.

  • Fine lines, wrinkles and skin aging: more collagen and elastin for firmer, thicker skin
  • Volume loss and hollowing: regenerates tissue in the cheeks, under-eyes and temples for a fuller look
  • Dull skin and uneven texture: promotes cellular renewal for brighter, smoother skin
  • Acne scars: stimulates collagen remodeling to soften atrophic scars and irregularities
  • Dark circles and under-eye hollowing: improves thickness and circulation in thin, crepey skin
  • Neck, décolletage and hands: the same regenerative approach beyond the face

Which is better for under the eyes?

The under-eye skin is the thinnest on the face. ezGel's soft, gel-like consistency makes it well suited to this area, giving gentle support while it releases growth factors over several days.

The concern matters more than the acronym. Thin, crepey, finely lined skin generally points toward PRF; darkness and discoloration generally point toward PRP. Dr. Cappel assesses which you have before recommending a preparation.

Can PRP and PRF treat hair loss?

Yes. The same preparations are used on the scalp to improve hair density and thickness, with visible change typically after three to six months. Hair restoration follows its own protocol, with an initial series of three to four treatments and maintenance every six to twelve months.

Treatment overview

What to expect, from consultation to results

  1. 01

    Consultation

Dr. Cappel assesses your skin, discusses your goals, explains the difference between PRP and PRF and recommends the best option.

  2. 02

    Preparation

Stay well hydrated. Avoid alcohol, smoking and anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen for 48 hours, as they affect platelet function. Arrive without makeup.

  3. 03

    Blood draw

A small amount of blood, similar to a routine lab test, is drawn from your arm and processed in a centrifuge.

  4. 04

    Treatment

The PRP or PRF is injected with fine needles or applied with microneedling. Topical numbing cream keeps you comfortable.

  5. 05

    Aftercare

Mild redness, swelling, bruising or tenderness usually resolves within one to three days. Most normal activities can resume right away.

  6. 06

    Results

A glow may show early; full results develop over four to eight weeks as collagen builds, over a series of 3 to 6 sessions.

Questions

Questions about PRP and PRF

You may notice an early glow, but full facial results develop gradually over four to eight weeks as collagen production increases.

The blood draw is like a routine lab test, and topical numbing cream is applied before injections. Most patients describe the sensation as tolerable.

Results can last 12 to 18 months or longer, depending on your skin, age and lifestyle.

Minimal. Mild redness and swelling usually resolve within 24 to 48 hours, and you can return to most normal activities immediately.

Most patients get the best results from 3 to 6 sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.

PRP is a liquid that releases growth factors within hours. PRF holds them in a natural fibrin scaffold and releases them slowly over several days. Neither is automatically better; each suits different concerns. See PRP vs PRF.

No. A vampire facial is PRP applied to the skin and driven in with microneedling, which works on surface texture and pores. PRF is usually injected to give structural support in a specific area. Ask which preparation and which technique are being used.
