A Total Body Skin Exam in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL at Dermagnify is a head-to-toe visual inspection of your skin by a medical expert trained to identify suspicious growths, the most reliable way to detect skin cancer early, when it is most treatable.
At Dermagnify, Medical, Surgical and Cosmetic Dermatology in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Dr. Mark A. Cappel, MD, provides expert, thorough Total Body Skin Exams for patients in Ponte Vedra Beach, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and throughout Northeast Florida.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, with more than 5 million cases diagnosed each year. When detected early, skin cancer, including melanoma, the most serious form, is highly treatable. However, early detection is key.
Many skin cancers develop in areas that are difficult to see on your own, and subtle changes in moles or new spots can be easy to miss. Relying solely on self-examination is not enough to ensure that potentially dangerous lesions are caught in their earliest, most treatable stages.
A Total Body Skin Exam (TBSE) is a comprehensive, head-to-toe examination of the skin performed by a board-certified dermatologist.
The purpose of a TBSE is to identify any suspicious moles, growths, or lesions that could be precancerous (actinic keratoses) or cancerous (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or melanoma). It is a vital preventative health measure for everyone, regardless of skin type or sun exposure history.
Dr. Cappel uses a dermatoscope, a specialized handheld magnifying tool, to get a detailed, cross-polarized view of suspicious lesions. This allows him to see structures beneath the skin's surface and make a more accurate assessment of whether a mole is benign or requires further investigation.

OVERVIEW

Your Initial Consultation
Dr. Cappel will review your medical history, ask about any specific spots you are concerned about, and discuss your personal risk factors for skin cancer.
Pre-Exam Preparation
It is helpful to perform a self-exam beforehand and come prepared to point out any new, changing, or unusual spots. Please remove all makeup and nail polish before your appointment to allow for a thorough examination.
During the Exam
You will change into a medical gown. The exam itself is a quick, 15-20 minute visual inspection of your entire body. Dr. Cappel will use a dermatoscope to examine any suspicious lesions more closely.
Biopsy (If Necessary)
If a suspicious lesion is found, a biopsy may be performed during the same visit. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic, and a small sample is taken. The procedure is quick and causes minimal discomfort.
After the Exam
There is no downtime. You can return to your normal activities immediately. If a biopsy was performed, you will receive instructions on how to care for the site. Biopsy results are typically available within 1-2 weeks.
